With a strong basis in the work of the cities libraries and librarians, the recently published programme for Strasbourg as World Book Capital City from 23 April 2023 is an exciting one, offering much not just to the city’s residents, but also to others interested in promoting books and reading locally.
The World Library and Information Congress 2023 (WLIC) Satellite hosted by IFLA's Library Services for Children & Young Adults (C&YA) and Literacy and Reading (LITREAD) Sections saw a vibrant gathering of professionals dedicated to fostering a love for reading among young people. Titled "Journeys into Reading," this satellite event, co-organized by the Dutch reading Foundation, was held at The Hague at KB, National Library and featured a series of insightful presentations that delved into innovative approaches, challenges, and successes in encouraging our very youngest to embark on the lifelong adventure of literacy and reading.
Action at a local level has a key role to play in building an environment where reading and creativity is encouraged and supported, for all. The UNESCO World Book Capital Programme is there to highlight and celebrate great examples of cities and towns doing just this. Could yours be the next one? Nominations are open until 16 April 2023.
