IFLA Newsletter, October 2023: The Community-driven Initiatives Issue

The message below accompanies the October 2023 edition of the IFLA Newsletter.
IFLA Newsletter, Vol. 3, No. 10
Welcome to the October edition of the IFLA Newsletter!
This’s month’s theme is community-driven initiatives, reflecting the fact that this, in the UN system, is Urban October. The month recognises the fact that the challenges we face differ at the regional and local levels, but also, and more importantly, that we can find solutions at these different levels and shouldn’t rely on centralised tools and mechanisms.
Just last week, we were in Nairobi with over 50 colleagues from across the Sub-Saharan Africa, talking about how IFLA can provide a platform and tools that help in building sustainable library fields at the regional, national and local levels.
We were also thrilled to be joined by colleagues from UN-Habitat, the United Nations agency that leads on questions of sustainable urbanization, and who underlined the vital place of libraries in their communities as public spaces, key resources, and catalysts for change.
You can read more about our workshop below, along with the usual rich range of updates from across our Federation. Under advocacy, don’t miss the last reminder to contribute your examples of libraries contributing to climate empowerment. Under professional news, find out more about the latest IFLA Journal, our Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning Section’s podcast series, and more. And under regional development, check out news from our regional workshop.
Finally, there’s news on how you can continue to benefit from all the work that went in to WLIC 2023, news about new members, and a look ahead to new opportunities!
Happy reading!
