The presentation on an unusual topic – packaging.
Short material is touching the archival context of packaging digital documents and physical items, especially for particular precious or delicate special materials. The demonstration of sustainable practices and diverse solutions adopted in five important international institutions is also concerning how to build or prepare the way to protect  the diverse special objects, held into a library, archive or museum. A new research in progress on the crutial topic of packaging is also coveniently presented.

PRESENTATION TITLE: SELF-DESCRIBING PACKAGING FOR TRUSTWHORTY DIGITAL PRESERVATION: ARCHIVEMATICA AIPS PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE.

Speaker: CORINNE ROGERS, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada Profile: Corinne Rogers is a system Archivist at Artefactual Systems (lead developers and organizational home to open source projects for digital preservation, Access To Memory (AtoM) and Archivematica, an adjunct professor in the iSchool, University of British Columbia, where she teaches digital preservation, and digital forensics. Her PhD research (2015, UBC) examined user perceptions of authenticity of digital materials.

 

PRESENTATION TITLE: BOOKS IN THE CRADLE. PROTECTING ANCIENT MANUSCRIPTS AND EARLY PRINTED BOOKS AT HOME AND ‘ON THE GO’.

Speaker: ISABELLA FIORENTINI, Biblioteca Trivulziana-Archivio storico civico, Milano, Italy.
Profile: Isabella Fiorentini is currently in charge of the Trivulziana Library, she deals in particular with the conservation and promotion of the book and archival heritage of the City of Milan. Organizes bibliographic exhibitions at Castello Sforzesco and carries out courier activities for exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Regularly publishes articles in the history of books and libraries. Carries out teaching activities for universities and training institutions. Member of Ente Raccolta Vinciana, an international center for studies on Leonardo da Vinci.

 

PRESENTATION TITLE: PACKING OF PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE ARQUIVO HISTÓRICO MUNICIPAL DE SÃO PAULO – BRAZIL.

Speaker: SHIRLEY SILVA, Arquivo Histórico Municipal de São Paulo, Brazil
Profile: Shirley Silva is a BA in history and a photography conservator. In her master’s research she studied the production of daguerreotypes in Rio de Janeiro; she is conservator at the Arquivo Histórico Municipal de São Paulo, Brazil.

 

PRESENTATION TITLE: OPTIMIZATION OF THE PACKAGING OF OBJECTS: DESIGN, MANUFACTURE, STANDARDIZATION.

Speakers: CÉLINE ALLAIN, VÉRONIQUE THOMÉ, LUCILE DESSENNES, ANNE CATHERINE LUSCINSKI.
Profiles: Céline Allain, Emergency preparedness coordinator at the National Library of France, Paris; Véronique Thomé is the Head of Preservation & Conservation Workshops Unit (François Mitterrand Site), Department of Conservation at BNF, Paris, France. Lucile Dessennes graduated from École du Louvre (Paris) in 1996 and then studied paper conservation at the Institut national du Patrimoine (INP, Paris). After her graduation in 2000, with a research on gouache consolidation, she joined the National library of France (Paris) and she leads since 2004 the Drawing and 3D-Model Conservation Laboratory at the National Library. Anne Catherine Luscinski holds a Master’s degree in protection of cultural goods specialized in preservation. She has published a number of papers in scientific journals. She joined the National library of France (Paris) in 2008 as Custom packaging manager.

 

PRESENTATION TITLE: COST-EFFICIENT AND ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE PRESERVATION METHODS FOR PREPARING PAPER-BASED OBJECTS FOR TRANSIT AND DISPLAY: A PROJECT SYNOPSIS

Speaker: AL CARVER-KUBIK, IPI, Rochester, NY, USA
Profile: Al Carver-Kubik joined Image Permanence Institute in 2012 and teaches and conducts preservation research with expertise in print and photographic processes. He has served as a photographs reviewer for the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s Save Our African American Treasures program since 2009. He has a MA in Photographic Preservation and Collections Management from Ryerson University in coordination with the George Eastman Museum. Before joining IPI, he worked in museums and galleries as a conservation technician, researcher, object preparator, and archival consultant.
