What is the IFLA/UNESCO Multicultural Library Manifesto Toolkit?

This toolkit was developed to give practical approaches on how libraries can apply the concepts in the IFLA/UNESCO Multicultural Library Manifesto.

The toolkit is divided into several parts:

  • Appendix C: Understanding the Manifesto: Workshop Handbook
  • Appendix D: PowerPoint Presentation

  • Appendix F: Decision Making Template
  • Appendix G: Core Actions – Toolkit Checklist

Similar to the hard work dedicated to writing the Manifesto, the section began in 2012 to work rigorously on the development of the toolkit. The IFLA/UNESCO Multicultural Library Manifesto Toolkit was launched at the 2014 80th IFLA General Conference and Assembly in Lyon, France to a large audience of conference attendees anxious to have a toolkit to assist libraries in planning, applying, and sustaining the principles and actions described in the Manifesto. In December 2018 the section reviewed the toolkit and translated it into Chinese.

Since then, we have added translations into Japanese (July 2019), Russian (February 2020), Spanish (July 2020), and French (October 2021). We are still in the process of working on the translation of other languages.

The final English version was reviewed and updated by Nicholas Demetriades and Section Member Le Yang. The Chinese version was translated by Section Members Lan Gao and Jiangshun Zhang. The Japanese version was translated by Yasuko Hirata. The Russian version was translated by Section Member Maria Neryueva and the IFLA Russian Language Centre.  The Spanish version was translated by Kirsten Grunberg, Freda Mosquera, and Alicia K. Long. The French version was translated by Eléonore Clavreul, Charlène Perrin, Lise Dachet and Van Ta-Minh.

The IFLA Section on Libraries Serving Multicultural Populations thanks all who have contributed to the creation, review, and translation of the toolkit.
