In connection with the World Library and Information Congress in Rotterdam, we offer a full-day Satellite Meeting on the theme of literacy for young children. This meeting takes place at the National Library in The Hague, easily accessible by subway or train from Rotterdam.

9.00 – Registration and coffee/tea

9.30 – Welcome and introduction by Chair of the day: Marianne Martens

Ph.D. Marianne Martens is a Professor in Kent State University’s School of Information, and also the Chair of IFLA Libraries for Children and Young Adults Section.

9.45 – Keynote speaker: Helen Limon

Ph.D. Helen Limon is a lecturer in European Studies at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. Prior to returning to the Netherlands in 2020, she was a Research Associate at Newcastle University in the Creative Writing Research Department, NCLA. Her Ph.D. project looked at portrayals of mothering in contemporary children’s fiction and her thesis included a novel for children, Om Shanti Babe, that won the 2015 Frances Lincoln Diverse Voices Book Award. She is a member of the EU funded European Literacy Network and has been associated with IBBY for a number of years. Most recently, she spoke at the Bologna Childrens Book Fair on representations of sexuality in children books. Currently, she is interested in the maritime imagery of anchors to explore therapeutic self-regulation in formal education and other learning contexts.

14.15 – Panel discussion about Bookstart and other book gifting programmes

Moderated by Daan Beeke, specialist in secondary education at the Reading Foundation and active in EURead – Reading network – Global Network for Early Years Book Gifting. With two presentations by Annie Everall from Authors Aloud UK and Adriaan Langendonk/Daan Beeke from the Netherlands. Other panel members are Claire Stuckey from IBBY Australia and Italian librarian Antonella Lamberti.

15.30 – Afternoon tea

Tea, juices, soft drinks and sweet and savory snacks.

16.15 – Closing act: Maranke Rinck & Martijn van der Linden

Maranke Rinck is an award-winning children’s book author. She often works together with her husband, illustrator and Dutch Children’s book laureate Martijn van der Linden. Among their many works is the well known series Popcorn Bob. Introduced by Adriaan Langendonk.

17.00 – Marianne Martens wraps up and closes the Satellite meeting
