On behalf of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, IFLA’s Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Regional Office and IFLA’s LAC Regional Division, we cordially invite all librarians, archivists, museum staff, information specialists, exhibitors, and other information professionals to attend the IFLA Meeting: Stories from regional IFLA volunteers in LAC: why engagement matters. 

The meeting will take place online through Zoom on Wednesday April 12, 2023 from 12:00 to 13:00 (Buenos Aires time). 

A number of IFLA’s regional volunteers on IFLA’s Professional Units who are from different countries in Latin America and the Caribbean will first talk about their work, and why their engagement with IFLA and IFLA’s Professional Units matters for the region. After that there will be plenty of time left at the end of the meeting for discussion and Q&As. Please block your calendars to join the event live and interact with the speakers and the participants, to make this an interactive meeting.  

The meeting will be conducted online, in Spanish and English and will have Spanish-English simultaneous interpretation.  

Programme:

Moderator: Isela María Mo Amavet, IFLA LAC Regional Office. Isela M. Mo Amavet is a Professor of History graduated from Universidad de Buenos Aires. She is Deputy Director of the Studies and Special Archives Office of the Argentine Library of Congress. She has worked as a teacher in different university institutions. Since March 2017, the Argentine Library of Congress has been the seat of IFLA’s Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, where she has been serving as Manager since August 2019.  From this role, she is committed to encouraging the Federation’s communication and presence in the community of Latin American and Caribbean librarians, to working in the organization of regional events and to being actively involved in library advocacy projects and in the communication of strategic issues.  

Introduction: Alejandro Santa, IFLA LAC Regional Division Chair. Alejandro joined the Argentine Library of Congress in 1985. He served as Deputy Director of the Modernization Office, and later as Director of the Planning Office, where he fostered the microfilming and digitization processes of the Institution. In 2011 he was appointed General Coordinating Director of the Library of Congress. He has specialized in Public Management, Digitization and Fundraising. He has participated in several environmental projects and has been trained in Environmental Management. As Coordinating Director he has strengthened the ties between the BCN and IFLA, and promoted the international insertion of the Library of Congress. As a result of his work history, in August 2021 he was elected Chair of IFLA’s Regional Division Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean. His management work focused on library advocacy and on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. He has also been appointed General Secretary of the Network of Parliamentary Libraries of the region. The objective of this Network aims at safeguarding the cultural heritage and coordinating efforts in pursuit of common goals in Latin America and the Caribbean.  

 Speakers

Sandra Gisela Martín, Bibliography Section . PhD graduated from the University of Buenos Aires, Area: Library Science and Documentation. Master’s Degree in Digital Documentation, University Degree in Information Technology and University Degree in Library Science and Documentation. Director of the Library System of the Catholic University of Córdoba, Argentina. Full Professor of the following subjects: Information Sources and Services II and Information Systems of the Degree in Library Science from the National University of Cordoba.  Postgraduate lecturer in several doctoral degrees, Master’s and specialization programs. Member of the Bibliography Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) 2021-2024. 

Angela Quiroz, Cataloguing Section. Ángela is a Librarian-Documentalist from Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana of Chile and Professor of Spanish from Universidad de Santiago de Chile. Since 2010 she has been working at the Library of the National Congress of Chile (BCN), in the Production of Sources Section. She is a member of the IFLA Standing Committee on Cataloging, for the period 2019-2023. She is also a professor in the Library Science and Information Management career at UNIACC University of Chile.

Máximo Domínguez, Information Literacy Section. Maximo has a degree in Library Science from Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas (UNACH), and a Master’s degree and PhD in Library Science and Information Studies from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).  He has attended congresses, colloquiums, seminars, meetings, among other professional activities.  Among his extra academic activities, he is a member of the Standing Committee of the IFLA Information Literacy Section for the period 2019-2023 and a permanent member of the RDA Mexico Group; and he is currently president of the National College of Librarians A. C. He has been working together with IFLA in the implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty in Mexico, where he has given workshops on skills and competencies of librarians for services for people with disabilities.

Roxana Huaman Huriarte, Management and Marketing Section. Roxana holds a degree in Library and Information Science from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, and a Master’s degree in Education Management from Pontificia Universidad Católica of Peru. She specializes in Projects, Innovation, Cultural Management and Information Technologies in Education. She is a teacher and workshop facilitator in these areas. Since 2022 she is a member of the Management & Marketing Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.  She has been a member of the jury of the PressReader International Award in Library Marketing in 2022 and 2023. 

Pablo Bruno D’Amico, Metropolitan Libraries Section. Pablo Bruno D’Amico is a Librarian and IT Technician. He holds a degree in Library Science and Documentation (currently working on his thesis) from Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata (Argentina). He works as Head of Online Services at Utopía Library/CCC and is an independent IT consultant. Member of the Board of Directors of ABGRA (Association of Graduate Librarians of the Argentine Republic) and co-opted member of IFLA’s Metropolitan Libraries Section (Metlib).

Juan Miguel Palma Peña, Serials and Other Continuing Resources Section. PhD in Library and Information Science at National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM); He is Academic Librarian and Professor at UNAM; He is a Member of Standing Committee of Serials and Other Continuous Resources Section and Open Access Working Group at IFLA. He has been Coach at Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning Section at IFLA.

Jennifer Voutssás, Social Science Libraries Section. Jennifer Voutssas has a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM); she specializes in digital libraries, archives and academic repositories. She was part of the digital data curation team of “El Cuento”, the most important magazine about short stories in Hispanic literature; also worked for the National Repository of México belonging to the National Council for Science and Technology. Currently, she is working a comparative study of global information policies from national libraries for the UNAM’s Institute of Bibliographical Research.

Janice Silveira, Library and Research Services for Parliaments Section. Director of the Library of the Brazilian House of Representatives since 2016, with a degree from the University of Brasilia (1990). Specialization in Library Science from Faculdade Internacional Signorelli (2015). Media Librarian at CBC – Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (2002-2007). Coordinator of the Digital Library of the Brazilian House of Representatives (2009-2013). Coordinator of the Implementation Project of the Brazilian House of Representatives Digital Library (2007-2008). Coordinator of the Discovery Solution Project of the Library of the Brazilian House of Representatives (2014-2015). Member of IFLA Library and Research Services for Parliaments (IFLAPARL) since 2019.  Member of the Network of Parliamentary Libraries for Latin America and the Caribbean, since 2018.  Coordinator of the Working Group of Parliamentary Libraries of the Brazilian Federation of Librarian Associations since 2020.
